Western facade of the Courthouse

Paris Courthouse houses several institutions : the Court of Appeal, the special Court of Assizes (handling crimes associated with terrorism and drugs smuggling in organized group) and the Court of Cassation.
The building has largely been refurbished over time. Its current condition dates back to baron Haussmann’s great works in the middle of the 19th century during which most of the Ile de la Cité was razed and rebuilt to become an administrative and judicial center.
Its western facade is imposing by the monumental staircase. It’s inspired by the Egyptian temple of Denderah, with large columns giving rhythm to it. The walls, symbolizing fullness, and the openings symbolizing emptiness, create a dichotomy. The two lions surrounding the stairs recall the Egyptian symbolism of enlightened justice. As for the large windows, they let a lot of light enter the hall located right behind, contributing to the edifice’s majesty.
