Virgin Mary is omnipresent in Notre-Dame de Paris and that’s rather normal since the cathedral is dedicated to her ! Thus, we can see her sculpted on the facade as well as painted on the vault of the crossing or in the choir’s chapels.
This statue located on the liturgical space close to the southern transept dates back from the 14th century. The Virgin is represented with a very soft face expressing the tender love she has for Baby Jesus, son of God. The lily she holds in her right hand symbolizes her purity.
The Marian figure is the subject of an immense devotion. Every evening, the mass ends with a chant in honor of the Virgin. It’s also in her that the young men about to enter the seminary in order to become priests confide. And it’s near her that poet and playwright Paul Claudel suddenly started to believe on December 25, 1886.
So you get it, Mary has a fundamental place in Notre-Dame de Paris.
