Darius’ palace

This imposing 5.32-meter-high pillar only forms the capital of a column measuring 22 meters in height. The work comes from Darius I’s palace located in Susa, Iran. Constructed circa 521 BCE, this building was divided in two distinct parts, a residential area in the south and a reception space called apadana in the north, from which this pillar decorated with two bulls’ heads comes.
In total, 36 columns of the same size supported the roof beams, giving the palace an effect of immensity.
